The refinance risk radar

A targeted approach for commercial credit portfolios

Tracking refinance readiness

The next refinancing cycle for commercial banks may not be defined solely by the size of the maturity wall. The US Treasury’s decision to expand liquidity-support buybacks of off-the-run securities has renewed focus on the long end of the yield curve and the refinancing conditions borrowers will face as they approach their next financing event.

Yet refinancing pressure is unlikely to be felt uniformly across credit portfolios. A large rate reset does not necessarily imply greater vulnerability, just as a near-term maturity or weaker credit rating does not, in isolation, signal refinancing stress. What matters is the interaction between the economics of the refinancing event and a borrower’s ability to absorb the impact.

For banks, this makes selectivity increasingly important. Assessing risk requires looking beyond headline maturity profiles and performance metrics to narrow the focus to borrowers that warrant closer scrutiny.

The key is a targeted approach that identifies vulnerable pockets within commercial credit portfolios, particularly borrowers reliant on earnings growth, asset appreciation, sponsor support or improved market conditions to refinance successfully and withstand any potential fallout.

Put simply, the objective is to identify individual exposures that merit deeper analysis.

Our latest point of view outlines a four-step screening framework to identify these vulnerable pockets across commercial and industrial, commercial real estate and leveraged finance portfolios.
